Starting a Business After 40: Maison Marcel & French Fashion

Starting a Business After 40: French Fashion, Entrepreneurship & the Story of Maison Marcel Boutique

What if the career you’ve spent decades building isn’t the one you’re meant to finish? What if your next chapter begins with a trip to Paris, a leap of faith, and a dream you’ve been carrying for years?

In this episode of La Vie Creative, host Krystal Kenney sits down with Andrea, founder of Maison Marcel Boutique, a French-inspired fashion boutique in historic Haddonfield, New Jersey.

After nearly 30 years as a corporate executive for a Fortune 100 company, Andrea made a life-changing decision. At approximately 48 years old, she walked away from her established career to pursue her love of French fashion, vintage clothing, and creating unforgettable shopping experiences.

Today, Maison Marcel is more than a clothing boutique. It’s a celebration of Parisian style, inclusive fashion, independent businesses, and the belief that it’s never too late to reinvent yourself.

From sourcing vintage fashion in Paris to organizing exclusive shopping experiences in France, Andrea has created a business that combines her love of travel, fashion, and entrepreneurship.

Her story offers inspiration for anyone dreaming of starting a business after 40, changing careers in midlife, or turning a creative passion into a successful small business.

From Corporate Executive to French Boutique Owner

Before opening Maison Marcel, Andrea spent nearly three decades working in corporate sales.

Her executive career allowed her to travel internationally, meet fascinating people, and develop valuable business skills.

But after almost 30 years, she began to feel uninspired.

Despite her professional success, something was missing.

During a solo trip to Paris, Andrea began reflecting on what she truly wanted from the next chapter of her life.

That experience helped inspire the creation of Maison Marcel.

At around 48, she decided to leave corporate America and open a French-inspired fashion boutique.

It was a decision that surprised many people around her.

Friends and family wondered whether she was experiencing a midlife crisis. Andrea admits that leaving behind a stable career was terrifying.

But her faith and belief in her vision encouraged her to move forward.

Nine years later, Maison Marcel continues to welcome customers who love French fashion and personal style.

Her journey demonstrates that changing careers after 40 or 50 doesn’t mean starting from nothing. Often, it means taking everything you’ve learned and applying it to something you genuinely love.

Why It’s Never Too Late to Start a Business

One of the most inspiring moments in our conversation came when I asked Andrea what advice she would give to women in their 40s, 50s, or 60s who believe it’s too late to pursue something new.

Her answer was simple:

“It’s never too late.”

Andrea believes that when an idea becomes something you can’t stop thinking about, it’s worth exploring.

But she also emphasizes that entrepreneurship requires genuine passion.

Starting a small business is not necessarily a shortcut to financial freedom or an easier lifestyle.

It requires sacrifice, commitment, adaptability, and an enormous amount of work.

For Andrea, the reward is the joy of doing something meaningful every day.

Three Lessons for Starting a Business Later in Life

1. Your previous career is an asset.

Andrea brought years of sales, marketing, product launches, and corporate leadership experience into her boutique business.

Those skills helped her develop her brand, communicate its purpose, and understand her customers.

2. Passion matters when entrepreneurship becomes difficult.

Running an independent boutique means handling responsibilities that would normally be divided among several corporate departments.

Andrea quickly discovered that she was responsible for everything from customer service to technical issues and daily business operations.

3. Be willing to change your original plan.

Andrea initially imagined Maison Marcel as a boutique filled with high-end vintage couture gowns from designers such as Dior and Oscar de la Renta.

But as she learned more about her customers, the business evolved into something different.

Today, Maison Marcel is a colorful, theatrical space filled with vintage fashion, accessories, and French-inspired treasures.

Her advice is to listen to your customers and allow your business to grow in unexpected directions.

Maison Marcel Boutique: Bringing Parisian Fashion to New Jersey

Located in historic downtown Haddonfield, New Jersey, Maison Marcel was designed to offer customers the feeling of stepping into a Parisian boutique.

Andrea wanted the experience to begin the moment someone walked through the door.

From the French greetings to the curated clothing and elegant décor, every detail contributes to the atmosphere.

She describes the boutique as resembling a dressing room at Marie Antoinette’s Petit Trianon, filled with color, bows, crinolines, and beautiful statement pieces.

Customers sometimes leave saying they feel as though they’ve just visited Paris.

For Andrea, that’s exactly the reaction she hopes to create.

Maison Marcel is not simply about selling clothes. It’s about transporting people into another world and making shopping feel memorable.

How Maison Marcel Sources French Fashion in Paris

One of the most fascinating parts of Andrea’s business is her connection to Paris.

She travels to the French capital approximately three or four times a year to source inventory and discover new pieces for the boutique.

Her buying trips include visits to Parisian markets, independent boutiques, and contacts within her network of French shop owners.

Rather than relying exclusively on large wholesalers, she seeks out unique items that reflect Maison Marcel’s distinctive aesthetic.

This approach helps the boutique offer an assortment of clothing and accessories inspired by French fashion, vintage style, and European design.

It also allows Andrea to maintain personal relationships with other independent business owners.

These relationships eventually inspired an entirely new direction for her business: luxury shopping experiences in Paris.

Exclusive Paris Shopping Experiences with Maison Marcel

In April 2024, Maison Marcel expanded beyond retail by introducing curated shopping trips to Paris.

Known as the Maison Marcel Experience, these trips bring small groups of approximately six to eight women to France for an intimate Parisian shopping adventure.

Andrea describes taking guests to favorite markets, introducing them to boutique owners, and sharing the personal connections she has developed over years of sourcing fashion in Paris.

One highlight she discusses is a special experience at Chanel’s historic address, 31 Rue Cambon.

Through her contacts, Andrea says her groups have enjoyed private experiences connected to the fashion house, including access to Coco Chanel’s apartment.

As a photographer in Paris, I’ve also had the opportunity to photograph Chanel’s private apartment, so I know how extraordinary that experience can be.

What makes these trips especially interesting is that they go beyond ordinary sightseeing.

They’re designed to introduce visitors to the people, places, and fashion traditions that make Paris so inspiring.

The Future of Fashion Tourism in Paris

Andrea sees significant potential in expanding Maison Marcel’s Paris experiences.

In addition to fashion-focused shopping trips, she is exploring the possibility of curated Paris flea market experiences for people interested in French interiors, antiques, and lifestyle.

For travelers who love Parisian style, these experiences offer a different way to discover the city through shopping, design, and personal connections.

Inclusive Fashion: Why Style Should Be for Everyone

Another important part of Maison Marcel’s philosophy is inclusivity.

The boutique carries clothing across a broad size range, from US size 0 to 5X, and welcomes customers of different ages and genders.

Andrea explains that her original goal wasn’t simply to make the clothing accessible to everyone.

It was to make the experience of fashion accessible to everyone.

She never wanted someone to walk into her boutique and feel excluded from the beautiful surroundings because of their size, age, or appearance.

Maison Marcel styles clients for a wide variety of occasions, from milestone celebrations and proms to weddings and formal events.

The boutique also carries plus-size vintage clothing and accessories.

For Andrea, personal styling begins with understanding the individual rather than trying to fit everyone into the same fashion ideal.

How to Find Your Personal Style and Dress with Confidence

During our conversation, we explored the relationship between clothing, confidence, and self-expression.

Andrea believes that what we wear can genuinely influence how we feel.

She describes making an intentional choice to wear bright colors or a red lip when she needs an emotional lift.

For her, fashion is more than an outfit. It’s a way to express personality, confidence, and joy.

At Maison Marcel, styling appointments focus on listening to clients.

The team considers the occasion, the client’s preferences, and how they want to feel in their clothes.

Andrea also describes the boutique’s extensive inventory, including a basement known as “the vault,” which holds approximately 15,000 pieces.

This gives the team a wide selection of clothing and accessories to help customers find something that feels right for them.

French Fashion Tips for Every Age and Body Type

Andrea shares several ideas inspired by French women’s style:

  • Choose confidence first. Feeling comfortable and confident can make an outfit more powerful.
  • Invest in versatile pieces. Classic clothing that works with multiple outfits can be more useful than constantly buying new items.
  • Edit your wardrobe. Think about what you already own before purchasing something else.
  • Develop your own signature style. Personal style should reflect who you are, not simply what is trending.
  • Focus on how clothing makes you feel. The right outfit is one that helps you feel like yourself.

These ideas apply whether you’re 25, 45, 65, or beyond.

French Girl Style: The Secret to Effortless Parisian Chic

What makes French fashion so timeless?

Andrea believes that part of the appeal lies in simplicity, confidence, and consistency.

While fashion trends change, classic Parisian style often emphasizes quality pieces that can be worn in different ways.

Think tailored black trousers, a neutral trench coat, well-chosen accessories, and clothing that feels elegant without being overly complicated.

Andrea also highlights the importance of editing your wardrobe.

Rather than owning endless versions of the same item, she encourages customers to think carefully about how each new purchase will work with the clothing they already have.

She asks questions such as:

  • How will you wear this piece?
  • What will you pair it with?
  • Do you already own something similar?
  • Will this item add something meaningful to your wardrobe?

It’s a thoughtful approach to shopping that emphasizes individual style over constant consumption.

French Fashion vs. Italian Fashion: Two Different Inspirations

Our conversation also explored the differences between French and Italian luxury fashion.

Andrea discussed Maison Marcel’s autumn/winter 2026 collection, which celebrated iconic Italian fashion houses including Gucci, Prada, and Fendi.

She reflected on how many historic French couture houses are closely associated with fashion design and artistic expression, while several Italian luxury brands have strong roots in leatherworking and craftsmanship.

Although these traditions overlap, Andrea enjoys exploring the different creative identities behind European fashion.

She remains particularly drawn to the romance, femininity, and imagination of vintage French couture.

For her, a beautifully designed 1950s Dior dress represents the kind of artistic expression that first inspired her love of fashion.

The Reality of Running a Small Fashion Boutique

While Maison Marcel offers customers an enchanting shopping experience, running the business requires considerable work behind the scenes.

Andrea admits that transitioning from corporate leadership to independent entrepreneurship was a major adjustment.

In her previous career, she had access to teams responsible for human resources, technical support, and other operational tasks.

As a boutique owner, those responsibilities became her own.

She also faced one of the greatest challenges for independent retailers: the COVID-19 pandemic.

Maison Marcel had been operating for nearly two years when the pandemic disrupted businesses around the world.

Despite the uncertainty, the boutique survived.

Andrea credits persistence, faith, and her love of the business for helping her continue.

Her experience offers a valuable lesson for aspiring entrepreneurs: success requires more than a good idea.

It also requires flexibility, resilience, and a willingness to handle the less glamorous parts of running a business.

Why Supporting Small Businesses Matters

Andrea is passionate about the importance of shopping independently.

She believes small businesses offer something that larger retailers often struggle to replicate: personal relationships and a genuine investment in the customer experience.

When you shop at an independent boutique, you often meet people who have personally selected the products, designed the space, and built the business from the ground up.

Supporting these businesses also helps sustain local communities and independent creative entrepreneurs.

For Andrea, the most rewarding part of Maison Marcel is not simply selling an item.

It’s helping someone feel beautiful, confident, and welcomed.

Final Thoughts: Your Next Chapter Can Begin at Any Age

What I love about Andrea’s story is that she didn’t allow age, fear, or the expectations of others to determine what came next.

After nearly 30 years in a successful corporate career, she gave herself permission to imagine something entirely different.

A trip to Paris became the inspiration for a boutique.

A love of French fashion became a business.

And that business eventually grew into a way to share her passion for Paris with other women.

Her journey reminds us that reinvention doesn’t have an expiration date.

Whether you’re thinking about changing careers, starting a creative business, traveling somewhere new, or simply expressing yourself more confidently through fashion, you don’t have to wait for the perfect moment.

Sometimes the next chapter begins when you finally decide to follow the idea that won’t leave you alone.

Because it’s never too late to create a life you love.
