From The Lion King to Authentic Expression: How Jua Amir Believes Creativity Can Transform Your Life

What if your greatest creative gift isn’t your talent—but your willingness to express who you truly are?

In a world filled with artificial intelligence, endless scrolling, and constant distraction, it has never been more important to reconnect with what makes us uniquely human.

On this episode of La Vie Creative, I sat down with Jua Amir—actor, singer, vocal coach, performer, and former The Lion King cast member—to explore creativity, authentic expression, spirituality, and why art may be one of the most powerful tools we have for personal transformation.

Our conversation moved far beyond musical theatre. We discussed reinvention, overcoming fear, finding flow, using AI as a creative tool, and how every person—not just artists—can live a more creative life.

If you’ve ever wondered whether creativity can change your life, Jua’s story offers an inspiring answer.

Who Is Jua Amir?

Jua Amir’s path has been anything but ordinary.

Born in Saint Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, he later grew up near Buffalo, New York, where music became part of his life at just three years old. He studied violin, later learned the oboe and flute, performed in community theatre, and discovered early that artistic expression was more than a hobby—it was his calling.

Instead of following a conventional career path, Jua chose experiences that would help him understand people.

He even became a flight attendant, believing that if he wanted to become a better artist, he first needed to understand human stories.

That curiosity would eventually take him around the world.

How Jua Amir Landed The Lion King in Paris

Like many performers, Jua faced rejection before landing the role that would change his life.

He auditioned multiple times for Disney’s The Lion King in the United States without success.

Then came an unexpected opportunity.

Disney was casting the French production in Paris.

Jua spoke French, loved the city, and embraced the challenge.

After several auditions, he joined the original Paris production of The Lion King, eventually performing more than 1,200 shows before continuing his career in productions like Hair and appearing on The Voice France.

His journey reminds us that sometimes rejection isn’t the end of the story—it’s simply redirecting us somewhere even better.

Why Authentic Expression Matters More Than Talent

One of the most powerful moments from our conversation came when Jua shared what he learned while traveling the world.

He believes that every human being possesses a unique creative gift.

Not everyone becomes a professional artist.

But everyone has authentic expression.

According to Jua, creativity isn’t reserved for musicians, actors, painters, or writers.

It’s something every person can access.

He describes art as a force capable of transforming both individuals and entire communities from the inside out.

That philosophy has become the foundation of everything he teaches today.

Reinvention Begins With One Brave Decision

Many people describe Jua as fearless.

He disagrees.

When I asked how he continually reinvented himself—from performer to coach to mentor—he gave an answer that stayed with me.

He didn’t think he was being brave.

He simply felt he had no choice.

After leaving an environment that no longer aligned with who he was, he realized that authentic expression wasn’t optional.

It became necessary.

That mindset has allowed him to embrace new opportunities throughout his career, even when they seemed impossible.

Why Art Is About Healing, Not Perfection

Today, Jua helps people reconnect with their authentic voices through coaching and community.

His process doesn’t begin by asking people whether they can sing.

Instead, he asks something much deeper:

“What are you trying to say?”

Through music, movement, conversation, and shared experiences, he helps people uncover the stories they’ve been afraid to express.

His philosophy is refreshingly simple.

There is:

  • No judgment.
  • No danger.
  • Only the opportunity to show up authentically.

When people experience that kind of safety, creativity naturally follows.

The Surprising Power of Community

Jua also leads a choir designed for people who believe they “can’t sing.”

Many participants arrive terrified.

Within minutes, they’re singing.

Not because they suddenly became professional musicians.

Because they stopped worrying about perfection.

The collective energy of the group becomes stronger than individual fear.

Watching people rediscover confidence through creativity has become one of the most rewarding parts of his work.

Jua Amir on AI and the Future of Creativity

With artificial intelligence transforming nearly every creative industry, I wanted to hear Jua’s perspective.

Unlike many artists, he isn’t afraid of AI.

He actively uses it.

But only as a tool.

He believes AI can:

  • Generate ideas
  • Speed up production
  • Assist with creative workflows
  • Help artists experiment more quickly

What it cannot do is replace authentic human expression.

Without human intention, AI simply rearranges existing information.

Real art begins with lived experience.

Jua predicts that as AI-generated content becomes more common, audiences will increasingly seek authentic work created by real people.

One Simple Habit to Feel More Creative Today

Toward the end of our conversation, I asked Jua what anyone could do today to reconnect with creativity.

His answer surprised me.

Hum.

Just ninety seconds of humming.

According to Jua, humming activates the parasympathetic nervous system, reduces stress, increases nitric oxide, and helps people enter a calmer, more creative state.

Long before meditation apps existed, humans instinctively used humming to soothe themselves.

Sometimes the oldest tools are still the most effective.

Creativity Isn’t Just Art—It’s Problem Solving

One of my favorite insights came when Jua redefined creativity itself.

Creativity isn’t limited to writing songs or painting masterpieces.

It’s:

  • Solving everyday problems.
  • Rearranging your home.
  • Starting a business.
  • Finding a better routine.
  • Designing a life that reflects who you are.

His example was beautifully simple.

Finding a way to create privacy on his Paris terrace became an act of creativity.

The same energy used to solve that problem is the energy artists use to create.

Creativity is simply seeing new possibilities.

My Biggest Takeaway

Every week on La Vie Creative, I interview people who have built remarkable lives through creativity.

Jua reminded me of something I’ve heard again and again:

Creativity isn’t a luxury.

It’s how we connect with ourselves.

Whether you’re building a business, raising a family, moving to a new country, writing a book, or stepping onto a stage, authentic expression is what gives life meaning.

Perhaps that’s why this conversation felt so timely.

In a world becoming increasingly automated, our humanity may be our greatest creative advantage.
