Arianna Smith: Bringing Classical Music to Life in Paris
On La Vie Creative, I’m lucky enough to meet an extraordinary variety of artists—painters, designers, dancers, writers, and the many musicians who create the soundtrack to our lives. Today’s story highlights the radiant talent of Arianna Smith, a classically trained violinist whose work has taken her from quiet corners of rural Illinois to the glowing lights of the Paris Opera.
In this blog post, we explore Ariana’s musical beginnings, her journey across continents, and her mission to make classical music accessible to all.

A Childhood Surrounded by Sound
Arianna’s love for the violin began at just four years old. Though her parents weren’t musicians, the energy of a musical household—thanks to her siblings—sparked her fascination. She jokes that by age four she had already “sold her soul to the violin,” and by nine she was playing in chamber groups and youth orchestras.
That early devotion became a compass that would chart the course of her entire life.
From the Illinois Countryside to Los Angeles—and Beyond
Growing up in the “boonies” of Illinois didn’t stop Ariana from pursuing big artistic dreams. Her path led her to the Colburn School in Los Angeles, one of the world’s premier conservatories.
Studying under influential teachers like Paul Coletti helped shape not just her technique, but also her understanding of music as a form of personal expression.
Eventually, her passion pulled her toward Europe—the historical heart of classical music. Paris offered exactly what she sought: a place where music is treated not just as precision but as storytelling.
Where American training often emphasizes technical excellence, Arianna felt drawn to Europe’s emphasis on emotion, narrative, and nuance. That shift changed everything.

The Art of Interpretation
Arianna describes herself not as a composer, but as an interpreter—a musician who breathes new life into centuries-old music.
She compares it to a cover band: the notes on the page may be the same, but every artist carries their own emotions, memories, and experiences into the performance.
Just as different actors portray Hamlet in wildly different ways, every violinist tells a unique story—even when playing Bach, Mozart, or Brahms.
That interpretative freedom is where Ariana feels most alive.
Life in the Opera: Stage vs. Pit
Arianna has played both on stage and in the orchestra pit of the Paris Opera, and each role comes with its own world of sensations:
On Stage
- Complete visibility
- High-pressure precision
- Direct connection with the audience
In the Pit
- No visual scrutiny
- Intense musical collaboration
- A deeper focus on sound and ensemble energy
She loves the pit for the way musicians sync breath, bow, and rhythm—creating something that feels almost communal, a shared heartbeat beneath the stage.

The Hidden Demands of a Musician’s Life
Arianna speaks candidly about the realities behind the glamour. Freelance classical musicians must be:
- Adaptable, moving from production to production
- Disciplined, preparing new repertoires constantly
- Physically strong, since playing for hours is a form of athleticism
- Emotionally resilient, navigating unpredictable schedules
She believes musicians should be treated like athletes—tending to their bodies with stretching, recovery, and intentional training to prevent injury.
Paris Opera & A New Generation of Listeners
One of Arianna’s joys is performing at the Paris Opera, where she’s inspired by the enthusiasm of younger audiences. Special programming—like under-28-only performances—is helping cultivate a new wave of classical music lovers.
Seeing thousands of young people line up for opera tickets reminds her that classical music is very much alive.
Sphe: Breaking Down Barriers in Classical Music
To challenge classical music’s elitist reputation, Arianna co-founded M SPHÈRE, an artistic collective in collaboration with a Parisian gallery.
Their goal?
Make classical music welcoming, human, and accessible.
By hosting concerts in relaxed environments—where audiences can sit, chat, sip wine, and experience music without pressure—M SPHÈRE is redefining what classical performance can look like.
Arianna wants everyone, no matter their background, to know that classical music belongs to them too.

A Story of Dedication, Curiosity, and the Transformative Power of Art
Arianna Smith’s journey is a reminder of how music moves across borders, cultures, and time.
Her story radiates passion, discipline, and a deep commitment to keeping classical music alive for future generations. Whether performing in the grand halls of Paris or in intimate collaborative spaces, Arianna brings heart and humanity to every note.
