From Fulbright Scholar to Music Industry Leader in Paris: Crystal Petit on Creativity, Courage, and Building an Unconventional Life in France

What happens when you’re accepted into Harvard Law School, receive an offer from JP Morgan, and then decide to pursue music instead?

For singer, songwriter, vocal coach, artistic director, and voice actor Crystal Petit, it meant creating a life in Paris that she never could have imagined.

In this episode of La Vie Creative, I sat down with Crystal Petit on her birthday to discuss her extraordinary journey from Atlanta to France, how a Fulbright scholarship changed the course of her life, and why following your heart often requires more courage than following a traditional path.

From Wall Street and Harvard Law to Music

Before becoming a respected figure in the French music industry, Crystal was studying economics at Spelman College and preparing for a future that looked very different.

She had completed internships on Wall Street, received an offer from JP Morgan, and had even been accepted into Harvard Law School.

Then everything changed.

A cousin secretly signed her up for the original Popstars television competition in the early 2000s. Long before reality singing competitions became mainstream, Crystal found herself working with industry professionals connected to artists like Céline Dion and Michael Jackson.

Although she didn’t win the competition, the experience opened her eyes to a different future.

Instead of law school or finance, she applied for a Fulbright scholarship and moved to France.

What was originally intended to be a six-month experience became more than 25 years of life, creativity, and community in Paris.

Why Paris Became Home

Crystal’s relationship with France began long before she moved here.

As a child, she visited Paris while living in Germany with her military family. Something about the city stayed with her.

Years later, she discovered an old childhood journal where she had written:

“I will be a singer. I will live in Paris.”

Remarkably, that’s exactly what happened.

Today, after more than two decades in France, Paris remains home. While she travels extensively for work and music, she continues to find inspiration in the city’s cafés, bakeries, neighborhoods, and creative energy.

Like many expats in Paris, she admits there have been challenges, particularly navigating winter months and adapting to cultural differences. Yet the city’s unique blend of beauty, culture, and community continues to draw her back.

Building a Music Career in France

One of the most fascinating parts of Crystal’s story is how she built an independent music career in France as an American.

Over the years, she has worn many hats:

  • Singer and songwriter
  • Vocal coach
  • Artistic director
  • Voice actor
  • Choir leader
  • Creative mentor

She has performed around the world, representing France in countries including Thailand, Vietnam, Estonia, and England.

Her career spans multiple generations of the music industry—from performing in bars for modest pay and chasing down performance fees to navigating today’s social media-driven landscape.

Having witnessed the industry’s transformation firsthand, Crystal offers a unique perspective on how technology, streaming, and social media have changed what it means to be an artist.

The Power of Being Multi-Passionate

One theme that repeatedly emerged during our conversation was the idea that people don’t have to fit into a single box.

In France, Crystal says she often encountered the belief that a person should have one profession and stick to it.

As an American, she has always embraced a different philosophy.

Why can’t someone be a singer, coach, voice actor, creative director, and entrepreneur?

Throughout her career, Crystal has continually followed her curiosity and trusted herself to learn new skills.

That willingness to say “yes” before knowing exactly how everything will work out has opened countless doors.

It’s a refreshing reminder that our identities can be layered, evolving, and expansive.

Raising Twins While Pursuing Creative Dreams

Another important chapter of Crystal’s story involves motherhood.

As the mother of teenage twins, she has learned to balance family life with a demanding creative career.

Like many artists and entrepreneurs, she has experienced moments of doubt, especially during difficult periods like the pandemic when much of the performing arts world came to a standstill.

Yet she continues to return to the same question:

“What would I rather be doing?”

The answer has always led her back to music, creativity, and helping others find their voice.

How to Know You’re Living Your Purpose

One of my favorite moments from our conversation came when I asked Crystal how she knows she’s living in alignment with her purpose.

Her answer wasn’t about awards, income, or recognition.

Instead, she talked about her journals.

For years, she has kept notebooks documenting dreams, accomplishments, ideas, goals, and reflections.

When doubt creeps in, she revisits those pages and remembers how far she’s come.

It’s a powerful practice that allows her to see growth that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Her advice?

Document your journey.

Write things down.

Celebrate your progress.

And don’t compare your timeline to anyone else’s.

Crystal’s Advice for Creatives and Dreamers

If there was one takeaway from our conversation, it’s this:

Your timeline is your own.

Whether you’re 28, 48, or 68, it’s never too late to begin something new.

Creativity isn’t reserved for artists. It’s available to everyone willing to stay curious, take risks, and continue learning.

Crystal encourages people to:

  • Build a supportive community
  • Follow their curiosity
  • Give themselves grace
  • Stop comparing their journey to others
  • Keep returning to what lights them up

As she beautifully reminds us:

“There is no other you.”
