The Writer’s Lens: Paris, Stories, and Translations with E.K. Bartlett

Language and culture can create endless avenues for expression and no one knows this better than E.K. Bartlett. As a poet, writer, and radio show host, their journey is a perfect example of the multi-faceted art scene in Paris and how they intertwine.

The Pursuit of Creativity in Paris

E.K. Bartlett’s voyage to the City of Light was filled with notable creative aspirations. E.K. initially moved to Paris to pursue a master’s degree in Comparative Literature and to participate in the Teaching Assistant Program in France. This program allowed them to immerse themselves in the linguistic environment they admired while also honing their creative skills through writing and translation. Their involvement with Paris Lit Up, a vibrant community focusing on various literary projects, helped Bartlett establish connections within the flourishing Anglophone community in Paris and wider Europe. Their role as a poetry editor at Paris Lit Up provided valuable experience in curating and interpreting creative works, all while deepening their connection to their mother tongue.

A Poet’s Lens Through Language

Bartlett is deeply inspired by the act of translation, specifically translating from French to English. This unique position allows them to explore nuances and cultural perceptions within language and gender. Their poetry often touches on themes like queerness and life in Paris, carving a niche that blends personal experience with language’s transformative power. One intriguing project is a collection based on their experiences with pole dancing. This collection challenges societal perceptions and celebrates transformation, showcasing how a once-stigmatized art form can become a liberating and empowering experience.

Creativity Beyond Borders

Paris offers Bartlett the ability to lead a balanced life between professional obligations and personal creative pursuits, a difficult equilibrium to achieve elsewhere. The French work culture accommodates their need for time and space to explore new writing horizons, which is not as easily attained in other countries with more demanding workweeks.

Translation: Bridging Cultures and Texts

One of Bartlett’s exciting future endeavors includes translating a feminist reinterpretation of Baudelaire’s poem “Une Charogne” by Clementine Beauvais. This translation challenges the historical perspectives of gender and power dynamics present in the original work, embodying Bartlett’s intent to offer contemporary insights through a bilingual lens.

Poetry as an Inclusive Art Form

In Bartlett’s perspective, poetry is a rich, accessible art form that belongs to everyone. They actively aim to demystify poetry, encouraging audiences to engage through performances that blend different art mediums like DJing and spoken word. Bartlett believes poetry can be as dynamic and immediate as music, aimed not just for traditional literary spaces but for diverse cultural venues.

Building a Creative Community

Supporting emerging poets and authors in Paris, Bartlett highly values the networks forged through workshops and creative circles. Such spaces not only inspire but also provide structure, encouraging writers to cultivate their craft. For Bartlett, these communities play a crucial role in fostering an environment where creativity thrives.
